Community Standards
The Department of Physics and Astronomy (P&A) strives to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. This multilayered goal includes representation at all levels within the department, more equitable recruitment, self-assessment practices, and community outreach. We know our goals have not yet been fully achieved, and progress requires commitment from all current and future members of the department.
We expect that all members of and visitors to the Department of Physics & Astronomy will conduct themselves in a professional manner that is welcoming to everyone and free from any form of discrimination, harassment, or retaliation. Members and visitors will treat each other with respect and consideration to create a collegial, inclusive, and professional environment that benefits everyone. All participants in the community are expected to behave in a supportive and inclusive manner to facilitate scientific study and discourse.
Members and visitors may not take any inappropriate actions or make inappropriate statements against anyone based on individual characteristics such as race, color, religion, national origin, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, parental status, marital status, age, disability, citizenship status, veteran status, genetic information, reproductive health decision making, or any other classification protected by law. Disruptive or harassing behavior of any kind will not be tolerated. Harassment includes but is not limited to inappropriate or intimidating behavior and language, unwelcome jokes or comments, unwanted touching or attention, offensive images, photography without permission, and stalking.
All members and visitors of the Northwestern Department of Physics & Astronomy must abide by these standards and other appropriate Codes of Conduct, for Faculty, Students, Staff, etc. Violations of those codes of conduct at Northwestern should be brought to the attention of the appropriate group.
