Yuanzhao Zhang Named Schmidt Science Fellow

April 9, 2020

Yuanzhao ZhangMr. Yuanzhao Zhang, a Ph.D. student working Professor Adilson Motter in the Physics & Astronomy department, has been selected to be one of 22 Schmidt Science Fellows. Each Fellow receives a fellowship and is paired with an internationally accomplished and experienced senior scientist as a mentor.  This program was established three years ago to foster  interdisciplinary research and help the best young scientific minds realize their potential.  The selected students represent eight nationalities and 17 nominating institutions.  Click here more information about the Schmidt Science Fellows and the 2020 cohort.

Yuanzhao is involved in one of the most fascinating results to come out of Professor Motter’s group recently, which shows that synchronization is actually enhanced and more rapid when there are small differences, or diversity, among the components of a group.  Yuanzhao also has an artistic bent, winning first place in a contest for beautiful scientific images.  He also created a YouTube video using dance to illustrate the synchronization results.  The dancers are students at a local all-girl high school, Regina Dominican.

Yuanzhao joins fellow Northwestern Ph.D. student Ms. Andrea d’Aquino (Chemistry) in being named a Schmidt Science Fellow. They are among the first Northwestern students to win this Fellowship.

 Congratulations Yuanzhao Zhang!
